The new Canon EOS R6 may have been overshadowed by its more expensive sibling, the EOS R5, but its impressive feature set could make it Canon's most popular camera. It fills the gap between the pretty impressive capabilities of the EOS R and the high-end specs of the EOS R5 (which, admittedly, might be too big a camera for the average user).

Put simply, the EOS R6 is essentially a more affordable R5, albeit with a significantly lower sensor resolution and more limited (but still excellent) video capabilities. And while the EOS R6 is classed as an enthusiast camera, it comes with features that rival Canon's professional – and extremely expensive – models. All of this adds up to make the R6 one of the best Canon cameras currently available.

Taking a leaf or two from the EOS 1D X Mark III's playbook, the EOS R6 inherits the same 20MP sensor resolution as the DSLR, but not quite the same sensor. The difference is in the architecture, as an improved version of Canon's proven Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus system has been incorporated into the sensor. This has greatly improved autofocus and tracking performance, with the EOS R6 now able to match and sometimes surpass Sony's real-time tracking autofocus.

20.1 Mpx is a step down from the 26.2 Mpx pixel count of the EOS 6D Mark II and EOS RP (or 30 Mpx of the EOS R), and it's noticeable in a side-by-side comparison, although you'll have to look really close to be disappointed. However, the dynamic range is disappointing - images taken in bright sunlight look flat, with a lack of detail in highlights and shadows. In comparison, the EOS 6D Mark II did better in the same situation. That said, image quality is still damn good, and shooting with the EOS R6 is an absolute joy.

The ergonomic design makes it comfortable for all-day use, no matter how big or small your gloves are, and you can shoot handheld at shutter speeds as fast as 2 seconds and still get remarkably sharp images (provided you have steady hands).

It's Canon's first attempt at in-body image stabilization (IBIS) and, boy, has the company nailed it! It makes shooting video an absolute joy. Yes, there are limitations to shooting 4K footage – and you don't get the R5's impressive 8K capability here – but Canon has made it very clear that the EOS R6 is first and foremost a camera.

Then there's the significant speed improvement - while it can't quite match the 1D X Mark III's lightning-fast 16fps with the mechanical shutter, the R6 is capable of 12fps. Switch to electronic shutter and it matches the incredible 20fps burst speed of a sports DSLR – more than enough for wildlife or sports photography.

All in all, the EOS R6 is a massive upgrade from the EOS 6D Mark II or even the EOS R and EOS RP, and deserves its place in our best photography cameras guide. But all that impressive performance doesn't come cheap, as higher-resolution full-frame mirrorless cameras are now available for a similar price.
