What's going on with OnePlus? This year, the brand scaled down the launch of its flagship to the unique OnePlus 10 Pro. The upside is that among the sea of Android smartphones currently on offer, there's only one OnePlus model to consider. The downside is that the OnePlus options are quite limited.

We're in the middle of a strange time for Android. We've lost some brands and gained some new ones that haven't showcased their wares yet. One of those brands that changed trajectories was OnePlus, which lost its co-founder Carl Pei to another startup that hoped to show off Apple's iPhone later this year. That left the rest of us wondering what would happen to OnePlus as its parent company Oppo announced plans to "deeper integrate" its ecosystem. If the OnePlus 10 Pro is any indication, the brand will likely retain its place as the next Android alternative. But this latest smartphone certainly doesn't shine as bright as when we said it's a brand on its way to becoming a true rival to Samsung.

The OnePlus 10 Pro has been in the Chinese market since January but is now available in the States. Instead of two variants, OnePlus decided to lead with just one flagship device and called it the "Pro" version from the start.

The OnePlus 10 Pro is available in two colors: Emerald Forest and Volcanic Black, the latter of which is what the company sent for review. The phone features exaggeratedly rounded edges like the regular Galaxy S22 series. Its back is semi-matte, and I personally appreciate that OnePlus has moved away from the glossy backs it had on its last two phone releases, the OnePlus 8 and the OnePlus 9 series.

The rear camera module pops out from the back like the Google Pixel 6. It has three camera lenses: a 48MP primary camera with OIS and f/1.8 aperture, an 8MP telephoto lens with OIS, and a 50MP ultra-wide camera with a 150-degree field of view that can be used as a lens fisheye type if you're in the mood. On the front of the device, there is also a 32-megapixel front-facing camera located at the top left corner like previous OnePlus devices. I'll get to the performance of these four cameras in a moment.

The OnePlus 10 Pro has a 6.7-inch QuadHD Fluid AMOLED display with a maximum brightness of around 480 nits. The screen size is slightly larger than the Galaxy S22+, as is the chassis of the OnePlus 10 Pro. The display has a maximum refresh rate of 120 Hz, although OnePlus offers a native frequency adjustment mechanism to match the content you're watching on the screen.

Inside, the OnePlus 10 Pro's hardware is similar to the rest of the global Android competition. It includes hardware such as a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor and 8GB of RAM. I'm a little bummed that we don't have a 12GB variant here, as it was the same as the last two versions of OnePlus phones, and partly because I preferred its phones over the competition. Even Motorola offers the option with the Edge+. The difference is minimal for the average smartphone user, but it's noticeable after you've had a year to fully "move in" to the device and cram it with apps and stuff. The OnePlus 10 Pro also only offers 128GB of storage, which is about half of what I've been working with for the past few years. After transferring a lot of my pictures and videos, I only had 16GB of storage space left. You might not like the restrictions if you're a local storage media hoarder like me.

Our synthetic benchmarks put the OnePlus 10 Pro's capabilities at the bottom compared to its closest competitors; Galaxy S22 Ultra, S22+, Xiaomi 12 Pro and Motorola Edge+, which all have the same processor. However, most of these review units also run on 12GB of RAM, which helps explain the OnePlus 10 Pro's slower numbers. (Samsung was also caught crunching numbers during our initial testing period, leading to some open questions about the validity of the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 benchmarks.)

Regardless, I had no performance issues during my time with the OnePlus 10 Pro, despite the smaller memory offering. I was watching Degrassi on HBO Max in split screen mode while chatting on Discord on the other side. The OnePlus 10 Pro was an excellent Pokemon Go companion, and we even had a Saturday night where we went through several TikTok rabbit holes with ease.
